The reading explains about the famous Chevalier memoir and it also highlights some criticisms that Chevalier exaggerated in writing the memoir and bragged about his achievements. However, the lecturer refutes all the three reasons of the passage and clarifies the accuracy of Chevalier memoir.
First, according to the lecture, borrowing and loan do not mean that Chevalier was poor because evidence has revealed that he had specific properties and he spent most of his time partying and gambling. But he did not have any cash to pay, so it coerced him to borrow money from merchants until he could sell his properties in order to receive cash. On the contrary, the reading explains that since a noticeable amount of money was borrowed from Swiss traders, it is obvious that poverty is the reason that made Chevalier to ask for loan.
Second, on the basis of the passage, Chevalier claims to have conversation with Voltaire who was a well-known author. However, it sounds skeptical that the exact and precise phrases and statements were used in the memoir because after all these years, it would be forgotten. Conversely, the speaker highlights that there are some clear evidence that prove this claim that Chevalier used to write about the meeting and the conversation that occurred between him and Voltaire every night and all of these notes would be used while writing the memoir; according to which all the skeptics about this claim will be wiped out.
Third, the professor clarifies this point that Chevalier did not escape from the prison with the help of his influential friends and connection. According to the lecture, the rest of the prisoners had more influential and powerful connections everywhere and he poses the question that in such circumstance they would have the chance to bribe their friends in order to get rid of the prison. What’s more, there is some evidence that shows that after his escape, the ceiling of the prison was being repaired which exactly prove the point that Chevalier escaped from the prison himself. On the contrary, the reading provides some counterarguments that emphasize the bribery aspect of his escape.
