OBJECTIVE AND SUBJECTIVE TYPE OF TEST

Essay topics:

OBJECTIVE AND SUBJECTIVE TYPE OF TEST

The lecture is about the two principle types of test used in secondary school. This is objective type and the subjective type. According to the passage, the objective type of test involves using matching type, fill in the blank, true or false and so on. The professor said that the objective type of exam is just merely memorizing dates, names and facts. The subjective type involves writing essays during exams. The latter is often used in school because it tests a higher level of understanding for students. According to the professor, he is in favor of using essay test in exams of students. He said that it will help the students think critically and solve problems. On the other hand, the author of the passage also said that essay test was used to see if students know how to organize, analyze and present information in a clear way. This is also used to organize and communicate their thoughts in a logical way.

Based on what the lecturer said, the problem with having essay test is that good writers can still have good grades even if they don’t actually know anything about the topic. Although the passage states that constructing an essay test requires lesser time and considers a bonus test, the professor disagree with this. According to him, grading an essay is harder because you have to finish it in one sitting. For example it is hard to grade all essays of a large class. He also mentioned that objective type of test can just be machine graded unlike the essay type.

In conclusion, the author of the passage and the professor both agreed that it is important to have essay test in exams of secondary schools. The professor also prefer to have both objective and subjective types in his exams depending upon the situation.
