Essay topics:

Secondary School system

The article and the lecture is about the system of school organization in the United States. The author of the article discusses how the school system are divided. However, the professor argues about the problems in this kind of system of organization at school.

The author of the articles explains how students are separated by chronological age. This kind of system is borrowed from the Europeans. In this kind of system, children at the age of six start formal schooling which is also referred as first grade. Students have to go through up to twelve grades. For those who cannot meet the minimum requirements, they still have to repeat a whole year.

According to the author, grade schools are divided into three. The first one is the primary grade which includes the grades 1 to 5 or 6 and kindergarten. Kindergarten is a preparation for first grade. It also referred to as elementary school which is taught by one teacher in a self-contained classroom. The second category is intermediate grade and also known as junior high school which begin from grade 6 or 7. This offers a three-year instruction wherein there is a team of teachers to offer subject-based classes. The last one is secondary school. It begins at grade 9 or 10. Classes are taught by subject specialist for about fifty minutes. Students are allowed to transfer classroom for 10 minutes. Students must complete all grades to be eligible for a high school diploma.

Based from the professor in the lecture, he doesn't agree with this system. This is because of the following reasons. First, people are different based from the academic readiness. According to him, some six-year-old are not physically, socially and mentally ready and mature to begin schooling. There is also a difference in maturity between a girl and a boy teenager and yet they are grouped in intermediate school. Second, according to the professor, the issue of promotion must be reviewed. He says that grade level requirements don't really show the real learning in a positive way. Repeating a whole year may contribute to boredom and poor self-concept and higher rates of dropouts. Differences on how long it take for a student to learn a concept is not considered. The lecturer insists that this is not ideal.

In conclusion, the author explains the differences in the grade school system of the United States while the professor disagrees and explains that this is not ideal for students.
