One of the threats to endangered sea turtle species is the use of nets by commercial shrimp-fishing boats. When turtles get accidentally caught in the nets, they cannot rise to the surface of the ocean to breathe, and they die
The lecture and the reading are both about a new invention to save endangered turtles which are accidentally trapped in shrimp nets and dead of lack of oxygen. This invention is called turtle excluder device (TED) and it can be incorporated into the nets. The writer criticised this method by giving three reasons. The lecturer argues those three reasons because she believes they are not adequate.
First of all, the reading mentions that the effectiveness of this equipment is small while its cost is high. Is is stated that one shrimp boat catches by accident one turtle every month but many of shrimps escape the nets due to the presence of TED. Besides, the installation cost of TED is expensive. The lecturer, however, disproves this idea. She asserts that there are thousands of shrimp boats working off the coast. As such, the amount of endangered turtles caught is huge in aggregate. Therefore, the problem is quite serious and TED is an effective way to tackle the issue.
Secondly, the author of the reading says that there are alternatives for TED like reducing the time limit that a shrimp boat is allowed to keep its net underwater. As the result, turtles can be released to breathe the air in due course. The lecturer, on the other hand, challenges this idea. She contends that the time limit method is only acceptable in theory. In real life conditions, it is impossible to reinforce this initiative because the authorities cannot monitor thousands of shrimp boats working in open sea.
Lastly, it is suggested in the reading that TED is not effective due to the fact that some turtles are too big to fit the size of TED. Therefore, they cannot escape the nets. The lecturer, however, rebuts this argument by telling of the flexibility of TED´s size. She notes that people can make the TED bigger without any issue. Thus, sizing is no longer a matter.
