Palm oil
The reading states three benfits of palm oil production. Admitting some probable benefits of palm oil, the lecturer contradicts the merits stated in the reading.
First, according to the passages, growing palm trees would reduce the rate of deforestation due to its high oil yield resulting in less required land use. The lecturer, however, argues that higher desirablity of palm oil in food and cosmetic industries has cause an ever-growing demand for this product. Thus, this constant increasing demand requires higher deforestation rate, up to 7000 km2 every minute, to prepare land for plating palm trees.
Second, it is true that buring biodiesel emits less carrbon in comparison to fossil fuels, yet the processes involeved with growing palm trees have a high carbon emission. To prepare and clear the land, farmers burn the vegitations on the land including "peat", leading to an enurmous amount of CO2 release to the atmosphere.
Third, the reading mentions that palm farms are usually controlled and owned by low-income farmers, and growing palm trees has higher profit for them compared with that of in growing other plants. However, the speaker points out that these farmers often do not control the farms for long. Big farm companies usually see a great commercial opportunity in these farms. They obtain the land and farm. As a result the farmers loose their land and get verry little money.
