in the past century, the steady growth of population and increasing agriculture and pesticide use have caused much harm to wildlife in the United States birds population. For birds, this trend is likely to continue.
The reading passage uses some reasons to show why the number of birds in the United states is declined. The professor ,however, refutes the reason and describes there are not a declining trend in growing population of birds because of human activities.
Firstly, the reading passage states that as human population grows, increasing agriculture will lead to the destruction of birds habitat. The professor reject this point and claims that urban development will result in providing more habitat for birds such as sea gulls. She says that although population of some species is shrinked, other species is increased.
Secondly, the professor goes on to refute the claim in the reading that growing human population and increasing agriculture will result in destruction of birds' habitat. She explains that in the US less and less land is used for agricultural purposes, because the new and productive crops increase the food production. So, the habitat of the birds will not destroy.
Last, in the reading passage the writer claims that by expanding human's settlement and increasing agriculture, the use of chemical pesticides will increase. The pesticides get into the water and food chain which can be harmful for birds. The professor points out that nowadays, the new and less toxic poisons is used. Also more pest resistant crop are developed so that the need for pesticides declines.
