In the past, eating avocados was not considered to be necessarily beneficial. Being unaware of their beneficial properties, people used them mostly as avocado oil for different purposes. It wasn't until recently that the advantages of consuming avocados were noticed.
First of all, avocados have vital nutrients that help in lowering blood pressure. They contain as many as 20 kinds of vitamins and minerals. To be specific, avocados are rich in phytonutrients and folic acid. These nutrients are known to be beneficial especially in lowering blood pressure.
Secondly, avocados are good for a healthy pregnancy. As mentioned above, they are known to be rich in folic acid. Folic acid does not just lower blood pressure but also reduces the risk of miscarriage and neural tube defects during pregnancy.
Lastly, eating avocados can also save a lot of money. Some vegetarians tend to eat avocados because they taste similar to meat products and seafood. In this sense, people can save money by eating the meat-flavored fruit since meat is more expensive than vegetables in general.
The reading and the lecture both are about whether avocados are beneficial or not. The author of the reading provides three plausible benefits of avocados. The lecturer challenges all the claims made by the author and illustrates them hereunder. Firstly, the writer suggests that avocados have vital nutrients and will help in lowering hypertension because they contain phytonutrients and folic acid. However, the professor counteracts this point and says that avocados are loaded with fats. Even though the avocado fats are healthier, the professor mentions fats are fats whether they are good or bad. He also adds the point that a single avocado has 300 calories. Moreover, they cause obesity in individuals which in turn leads to an increase in hypertension. Secondly, the article posits that avocados are good for pregnant women as they are rich in folic acid, it will eliminate the risk of miscarriage and neural tube defects of baby. On the other hand, the academician argues that pregnant women should avoid eating avocados because they decrease not only the milk production of pregnant women but also damage the mammary glands. Additionally, the baby's stomach is not accustomed to digesting the avocados. Finally, the reading depicts that eating avocados can save money because they taste similar to meat. Furthermore, the meat is more expensive to buy so eating meat-flavored fruit will satisfy vegan people. On the contrary, the tutor mentions that one pound of apples and single avocado costs the same when it comes to the price. Even more, growing of avocados are very costly as it consumes many gallons of water. On top of it, he says that growing avocados is not only a waste of money but also a waste of natural resources.
