Essay topics:

Professors should appear on TV which ultimately benefits their respective universities and the professors themselves. Also this benefits the general public.

The reading states that television appearances of professors are beneficial to themselves as well as to their universities and the general public and provides three reasons of support. However, the professor asks the question that does anybody benefit from the appearance of the professor and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that the appearance in television will increase reputation of the professor. The professor refutes this point by explaining that it is not good for professors to appear in televisions. He states that, peers of professors might think bad about the professor who features in the television. Moreover, it makes them to feel that the featured professor lacks academic stuff so that he is only confined to entertainment purposes. Showing up in televisions frequently leads to decline in the money allotted to the professor which makes him unproductive to produce some good research.
Second, the reading posits that the universities reputation will be increases if their professor featured in television programs. However, the professor contends that it is a liability to the university. According to the professor, a lot of time will be wasted in preparing for the topic, travelling and trying to look good for the program. Instead, this time can be used productively by involving in a research, meeting students and clarifying their doubts and attending university meetings which qualitatively upgrades the reputation of an university.
Third, the reading avers that the public can gain from professors appearing on the television. The professor opposes this point by saying that the telecasting channels do not want the topics discussed in the program to be serious. They simply just want academic title for the program rather than academic knowledge related to it. These programs are just back ground informations, introductory sessions, so that we can not gain any profound knowledge. This short amount of knowledge can even get covered efficiently by a news reporter.
