The reading and the lecture both about pterosaurs. The author of the reading feels that pterosaurs can’t fly they can only glide. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. She is of the opinion that pterosaurs are warm blooded and can fly.
To begin with the author argues that modern reptiles are cold blooded and pterosaurs could be cold blooded as well and cold blooded animal’s metabolism is very slow that they can’t generate enough energy. Powered fly requires a lot energy but cold blooded animals can’t produce this amount of energy. The article also mentions that modern vertebras are warm blooded that they can fly. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that pterosaurs have a dense hair like fur and this type of fur can be found on only warm blooded animals. Additionally, she says that with the help of this fur they would not suffered from external cold and flied much faster.
Secondly the writer suggests that pterosaurs are very large animals like giraffe and it would not let them to fly. In the article it is also said that their body is too heavy that they can’t flap their wings to stay in the air. The lecturer however rebuts this by mentioning skeleton of pterosaurs are very soft and light. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that studies on their skeleton shows that they were light enough to fly in the air and flap their wings.
Finally, the author posits that animals that use powered flight can take off from the ground easily and they use their back limbs to gain speed and jump off from the ground. Moreover, it is stated in the article that pterosaurs have very weak legs that they can’t handle jumping with this legs. In contrast the lecturers position is that modern birds use only their back limbs to launch to air. She also notes that pterosaurs used 4 limbs to generate speed and launch to the air.
