The reading and the lecture are both about the Torreya Taxifolia, an evergreen tree which started to die in Florida. The author of the reading feels that there are 3 ways for preventing this tree from death. The lecturer challenges this claims made by the author. She is of the opinion this way are not solution to the problem.
To begin with the author argues that Torreya lives in microclimate conditions that is cooler and damper than all of the nearby conditions. The article also mentions that scientists trying to plant Torreya on climmates like this. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. She claims that microclimates that the Torreya lived are changing and are not suitable. Additionally she says that global warming increased temperature in this places and microclimate’s conditions changed.
Secondly the writer suggests torreya can be transferred to the places other than its first place that its weather cooler as microclimate. In the article it is also said that Torreya in the past transferred to north and migrated by humans to its current areas. The lecturer however rebuts this by mentioning relocating Torreya can help it to survive but it would not be good for other plants in this area. She elaborates on this by bringing up the point that a tree named Black Locust transferred another area grow very fast spread qucily but it killed lots of plants in nearby areas which is endangered.
Finally the author posits that Torreya can can be growed in research centers in special environments for protecting and conducting researchs. Moreover it is stated in the article that with the help of this project they can ensure Torreya survival abilitys. In contrast the lecturers position is that in this environments Torreyas can not resist diseases and will increase genetically divorced. She notes that research centers do not have enough ability and place to help this species survive.
