Question : Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they case doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
Recently, there has been a ton of debate about whether the wood companies in the United States would adopt the ecologically friendly practices for their business or not. More specifically, in regards to the reading passage, the author puts fort his idea that even if an international organization started issuing eco-certifications to wood companies that meet high eco-logical standards, it is unlikely that wood companies in the United state would do the same. In the listening, the lecturer is quick to point out there are some significant flaws with the writer's claim. In fact, he believes that companies in the United state would follow to ecologically friendly practices in order to receive eco-certification, and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author of the reading claims that American consumers are exposed to many advertising that they won't pay attention to the eco-certification label. In the listening the lecturer stand in firm opposition to this claim. He challenges this argument by saying that companies don't trust all the advertises the same, in fact they value the independent eco-certification agencies. He further elaborates on this by mentioning that ecologically minded people would respect the famous wood product certified by the certificate agencies with international recognition as they are trust worthy.
Secondly, the writer posits that as the eco-certified wood will be more expensive due the cost involved with the eco-certification, American consumers would choose cheaper uncertified wood as they are strongly motivated by price. The lecturer rebuts this by asserting that price is not the only factor, the American people pay attention to while choosing any product. Furthermore, he states that if the price difference is small between two products, other factors play an important role. They give importance to protect environment and hence they would buy the eco-friendly wood.
Finally, the author states that pursuing certification would make sense for the companies in America only if they sell most of their product abroad. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim, whether American companies would value the certification doesn't depend on the foreign consumers, in fact on the number of foreign competitors in USA. He further argues that if the domestic companies don't follow the eco-friendly standards, the foreign competitors would capture the market by their eco-certified wood product.
Just to wrap things up, both the author and the lecturer hold conflicting views on this.
