The reading passage states that there is a decline in reading the literature. However, the lecturer says that there' no real decline
The lecture and the reading passage are about whether a trend in reading less literature in public, is negative or not. The speaker casts doubt on the points made in the lecture. In fact, the professor suggests that the fact that people read less books not necessarily has the adverse impact on society. She feels this way giving the following reasons.
First, the professor questions the point of the reading passage that only books foster an imagination ability. She suggests that there are other forms of reading, such as a political analysis or a science book, that exercises the way we imagine things.
Second, the point of the reading of low-quality forms of entertainment degrading modern society, is challenged by the lecturer. The speaker states that non-literate means of art including movies do not exert a negative impact on people.
Finally, the speaker contradicts the point of the lecture blaming the low reading level on general scale that caused a decline in support of publishing books written by serious writers. In fact, she makes a claim that serious literature samples were not either read earlier, because they were difficult to be understood.
