The author of the reading believes that the main reason why sea otters have disappeared is the pollution situation. However, the lecturer states that the main reason of reduction in number of sea otters comes from the other end - hunting. She uses the following evidence to indicate that it is quite possible that the main reason of reduction in number of sea otters is hunting instead of pollution.
First of all, the professor posits that the theory around the pollution issues is weakened because there are no dead otters anywhere around the water. On one hand the evidence concerning that nobody can find a dead otter weakened the argument of the author, on the other hand this evidence strengthens the hunting theory. The lack of dead sea otters demonstrates evidence against the pollution factors.
Secondly, the lecturer posits that the number of other mammals such as whales has also decreased, in addition she states that the sea whale is the main source of nutrition for orcas, known as killer whales. Furthermore she pays our attention on the fact that human beings are also responsible for the decrease in population of otters through fishing activities. In terms of decreased population of the main food source of the orcas, they try to find alternative sources of food and begin hunting smaller mammals, such as sea lions and seals. However the reading contends that the decrease in other sea mammals points to environmental pollution, since it should affect the entire sea ecosystem rather than a single species.
Finally, by stating the inability of orcas to reach otters in such locations as shallows, where population of otters did not decrease at that time, the lecturer again bolsters the idea of hunting instead of pollution. To demonstrate this she points to the fact that there is no adverse change of population of otters in unreachable to orcas locations. On the other hand, the author of the reading states that the ocean currents could create uneven distribution of pollutants along the coast, which could be an alternative explanation survival of otters in unreachable to killer whales locations.
