The reading and the lecture are both about photographic negatives found in a box in a home in California. The lecturer casts doubt on the main points mentioned in the article by providing three controversial reasons.
In the reading passage, the writer begins by saying that some of the negatives comprise an image of a leaning pine tree which appears in other Adam's photographs. However, the professor points out that that tree was not a random tree. It is a well-known tree, and actually it is one of the tourist attractions in that city. Thousands of visitors visit that tree, and many photographers have taken a photo of that tree.
Furthermore, according to the text, the handwriting on the box is analogous to Admas' wife's handwriting. On the other hand, the professor repudiates this claim. He asserts that Adam's wife was a daughter of a famous artist and lived her entire life in that city. Some of the places were miswritten on the box. How could she misspell those places where she spent her entire life?
Eventually, the author believes that because Adam had a fire incident in his studio and some of the discovered negatives include an indication of fire, those negatives belong to Adam. Not surprisingly, the professor refutes this claim by contending that back then, fire hazard was prevalent since negatives incorporate a flammable chemical substance. Many other artists' and photographers' studios caught on fire at that time.
To sum up, both the lecturer and the author hold conflicting views on whether the negatives found in that home belong to Ansel Adam or not.
