The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake. The level of salt in the lake's water—what scientists call its salinity—has been increasing steadily for years because the lake's water is evaporating faster than it is being replaced by rainfall or rivers. If the trend continues, the lake's water will soon become so salty that the lake will be unable to support fish and bird populations. The lake would then become essentially a dead zone. Fortunately, there are several ways to reverse the trend that is threatening the lake's health.
There is a salty body of water inland far away from Pacific Ocean in the state of California. The water in this sea is being vaporized in a faster rate than its refilled by rainwater, resulting in increase in its salinity. This has raised concerns regarding the well-being of the local fish or birds. The passage proposes three solutions to help restore its salinity, but the professor challenges these measures.
First, the text proposes construction of desalination facilities. These facilities will vaporize water, leaving toxic materials behind. The vaporated water that is less salty can then be accumulated and returned to the sea. The professor says this process will be more harmful to the local people. According to her, when the salt or the toxic material left behind are mixed in the air, people will breath it harming people's health.
Second, pipelines or canals can be constructed to transfer ocean water to the sea. Since sea water contains less salt, it can help in decreasing the sea's salinity. The lecturer opposes this idea by suggesting that this measurement is too costly and not economically viable. The distance to the ocean is 100 km and the local government do not have enough resources to construct these facilities.
Third, walls can be constructed for seperating bodies of water. Fresh water from rainfall can then be allowed to certain bodies, resulting in salinity decrease. According to the professor this proposition is unlikely to be helpful in the long run due to the local geological challenges. This area is known for its geological activities and earthquake happen on regular basis. In case of earthquakes, the contructed walls will collapse and the sea will return to its past state.
