In this set of materials, the reading passage states that the Salton See in California encounters a major problem. The level of salt is increasing for years for different reasons. The passage introduce three solutions to solve this issue. However, the lecturer finds all the solution dubious and impossible to happen. She provides some evidence to refute them all.
First of all, the author of the passage claims that direct removal of salt through evaporation mechanism can make the water pure. In contrast, the professor argues that remaining salt is contaminated by some other poisonous chemicals which are dangerous for health. Even breathing the air of that chemicals can cause serious problems. So, this is not a safe solution.
Furthermore, it is mentioned in the reading passage that dilution of the salt in the lake is another way to reduce the level of salt. It proposes to use ocean water for this purpose. On the contrary, the lecturer contends that oceans are really far from the lake and long pipelines are needed which are too expensive. The government does not have enough resources to pay for the cost. Therefore, it is not practical at all.
Finally, the reading passage asserts that constructing walls is a definite solution. If they divide lake to a main section and some smaller sections, the main one stay clean with lower amount of salt. Conversely, the professor believes that for short while it may work but it is unlikely to help for a long period. Earth activities such as intense earthquakes would destroy the walls and mix all the water together. In fact, this one does not permanently solve the concern even though for temporary time is not bad.
