sea otter population started declining rapidly due to environmental pollution or attacks by predators
Both the passage and lecture discuss about sea otters. More specifically, in regard to the passage, the writer puts forth the idea that the sea otter population started declining rapidly due to environmental pollution or attacks by predators the lecture disagrees to that.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states that the pollution is likely the cause that their source such as oil rigs, other source of industrial chemical pollution, and increase level of chemicals in water cause the deaths of otters. Some professionals in the same field, however, stand in firm opposition to this claim. In the listening, for example, the professor states that more than pollution predations the most likely cause of decline population of otter. If they would have died cause of the pollution then they would have found the dead bodies, but there are none.
One group of scholars, represented by the writer, thinks that other mammals such as seals and sea lions were also declining with the same cause as the otters this again points to environmental pollution which effects the entire ecosystem. The orca predators don’t get the affected cause the survive on other whales. Again, the speaker specifically addresses this point when he states that orca predator eats other whales, and the whales have disappeared Alaskan coast because of humans. And so maybe the orca has changed their diet with other mammals.
Finally, the author brings his argument to a close by suggesting that scientists believe that the pollution hypothesis could explain the uneven pattern of decline of otter at Alaskan cause of current or environmental factors. While some remain stable in population. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that the orca predator whales who rely on whether the most on is the location is accessible or not. They are so big that they can’t access the shallow or rock locations and these are the location where the otter where they hide. So maybe this could be the reason of uneven decline of otter population not pollution.
