In the lecture, the professor made several points about the power of information. The professor argues that even though educated people have the facts about a specific problem they aren’t going to change their minds. On the other hand, the reading contends that by having facts people are going to be better citizens in their country which isn’t necessarily true. The professors’ lecture casts doubt on the reading by using a number of points that are contrary to the beliefs of the reading passage.
The first point that the professor uses to cast doubt on the reading is that facts don’t necessarily change peoples’ mind. In fact, he states that the high educated people are less likely to be open to new information while the other ones with the low educational rate are ready to receive new information with open doors. Another thing that he mentions is that facts carry about the information, and people don’t care about that instead he says that stories are the ones that change peoples’ minds. This differs from the reading, which states that if people do not have correct information from the media they aren’t going to be able to understand the issues.
Next the professor discusses the reading’s point about searching for the truth. The professor claims that people base their opinion on their beliefs rather on facts. They even accept bad information if they make the standards of their beliefs. Moreover, he argues that new information doesn’t affect them. However, the reading states that people are going to search for the truth no matter which contradicts the listening.
Another reason why the professor disagrees with the points of the author of the reading passage is that people will not listen to the new information if they are threatened. He claims that they are easier to be controlled by politicians. While on the other hand reading passage sates that people are going search for the truth, no matter what.
