Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they challenge the specific theories presented in the reading passage.
Controversy has risen of whether smart cars are good things. The passage firmly believes that this new invention is advantageous due to the deduction of accidents, minimization of commuting time, and reduction of cost in driving. However, the lecturer questions the validity of the reasons.
Concerning traffic accidents, smart cars aren’t capable of preventing catastrophes. Though it is said that smart cars will be equipped with sophisticated technology to detect obstacles and control braking and turning which can prevent accidents, the lecturer points out that the technology will fail occasionally. Since smart cars will travel at greater speeds and closer together, such technology failure will result in accidents that are more serious than those caused by nowadays human drivers. So, smart cars can’t prevent accidents.
Unfortunately, smart cars also can’t save time. Despite the claim that commuting time for many people will be reduced because smart cars will be able to travel at greater speed and closely together, every improvement in driving convenience actually results in more people taking the road. Therefore, the introduction of smart cars will actually result in more people taking the road, which will cause additional traffic congestion. Commuting time is therefore not likely to decrease.
The possibility of reduction of cost in driving is low. According to the lecture, smart cars will be able to choose the most direct route. With less travel distance, money can be saved for repair and part replacement costs. Still, sophisticated technologies utilized by smart cars will make the car more expensive to purchase and even more costly to repair. This added cost will offset the savings identified in the passage.
