Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading passage describes the critics’ reasons for replacing the traditional voting system in the US with the computerized voting system. However, the lecturer disagrees with the passage and explains the many disadvantages of computerized voting systems which I will be discussing in the following paragraphs.
Firstly, the critics think that computerized systems will be easy to use than the traditional systems. But, the lecturer opposes this by saying that it will only be easier for those who know how to use computers. It might scare away those who do not know how to use technology.
Furthermore, the passage claim that the computer systems might be quick and less erroneous at vote counting than manual counting done in the traditional system. Again, the professor does not agree with the critics’ argument. The lecturer said that computers are made by human beings so it would be unwise to believe that they will be flawless. The computer programs made by humans might have mistakes that can cause even bigger problems like displacement and miscounting of thousands of votes. Further, it might be difficult to recount the votes in these systems as there are no records of the votes.
Lastly, the passage says that we should trust the technology with voting systems as we trust it with banking transactions and communication. But the professor in the lecture does not agree with this viewpoint and says that the technology initially created for banking and communication was full of flaws and it got better and more reliable with time because it is used on daily basis. But voting takes place once or twice a year which is less time to completely trust a computerized voting system.
