Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage
The reading and lecture are both about the colonization of asteroid which are thought to be more reaslistic and feasible in recent years. The author of the reading states the multitude of advantage that we can obtain studying asteroid. The lecturer disagrees. He mentions that the study of asteroid does not provide evidence to prove the claimed benefit and attacks each of the claims made in the article.
First, the author begins by stating that since the size of asteroid is small in size, less gravity and lack of atmosphere, this provide the perfect ambiance to conduct scientific reasearch. In addition, this aid in various academic reasearch such as the way to travel to other planets as well. The professor believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends that owing to the lack of knowledge about how many and what resources are available there, it does not offer enough knowledge for any postential research.
Secondly, according to the writing, asteroid assist in mining of resources that are essential for new industries and consequently with the establishment of industries many job opportunities are created for the youth. Moreover, this restrict the exploitation of resources and conserve earth environment.
The speaker on other hand points out that as we do not know the amount of available resources and how much does it cost to take it back to the earth, this does not seem convincing.
Finally, the reading passage also notes that these study aid in the survival of human in long run as it act as a refugee in case of large devastation caused by nuclear war. Furthermore, although this does not happen this helps in the study of origin and evolution of solar system and human life. The professor rebuts this argumnet. He puts forth the idea that since there are many small asteroid with not enough mass, human survival is not possible. Thus, it is crucial to create environment where we can cope with gravity otherwise it results in aching of bone and muscle making human survival uncomfortable.
As we can see the author and lecturer holds conflicting views on benefit of asteroid study. The speaker effectively challenges the writer’s argument.
