The article and the reading both discusses about the suppression of forest fire and it's effect on the forest. The reading claims that decrease in the destruction of forest by fire is important to promote healthy and long life of the forest. The lecture challenges the claim that the fire suppression has its long term effects on the forest.
To begin with, the author argues that fire suppression increases the longer lives and the maturation of trees. This specific argument is challenged by the lecture that the maturation of trees leads to a dense forest where there will be the lack of light for the young trees. Also, young trees would not mature enough to replace their old ones.
Secondly, the reading posits that forest fire burning decreases the nutrients in the soil. Moreover, the author says, it is good for the ground level bushes and vines to flourish and grow. The lecture, however, rebuts this by mentioning that recent study has proved that there is tremendous amount of nutrients found in the soil after the forest fire which is released from the burned trees.
Finally, the reading claims that as a result of suppression of forest fire - there is an increase in the number of deer population. In contrast, the lecture's opinion is that this also leads to the destruction of the young oak tress. She elaborated this by bringing up the point that the deer population feeds on the leaves of young plants which finally gets killed despite lack of light or the dense forest.
