Team work to complete a project.
The reading and the lecture are both about forming group to perform a certain job in a organization. The author of the passage believes that to build team for completion of a certain project is always beneficial for the organization. However, the lecturer challenges the claim of the author and he cited some examples to rebut the author's conclusion.
First of all, the author mentions that group is made up of different people from varieties background, which resulted into wide ranges of knowledge and expertise. This facilitates the organization to complete the project efficiently. The lecturer rebuts the author's claim. He believes that completing a project by forming team is not a wise decision. Because, in a group all members does not perform their duty properly. There always exits free rider problem in performing a tasks with a team. In a team, there will be few person who does not do their responsibility, yet they will get the reward as the team successfully completes the project. This will give the rise of grievances to the member, who actively perform their jobs.
Secondly, the author believes that the team can take risky decisions because if that decision fails then all the members will be responsible and it encourages the team to take risky decision. Sometimes these risky decisions can be profitable for the organization's perspective. On the other hand, the lecturer argues that in a team there will be one/two influential members, who always try to impose their decision without ignoring the opinions of other members. This kind of activity gives rise of conflict among group members.
Finally, the reader asserts that members of a team has also incentive to work vigorously. Because if a person of a team shows extraordinary talents in performing a job, then the management of the company will recognize him. However, the lecturer argues that it is not always true. Because in a team, it difficult to segregate the outstanding performer.
