TOEFL Integrated: Altruism:
Summarize the points made in the lecture you just heard, being sure to specifically explain how they cast doubt on points made in the reading
The article discusses about let it burn policy which was granted since 1960s by which the fire happened in forests was not interfered by people until it went out naturally. But because of the massive fire that went on in 1988 in Yellow stone, people started to criticize the policy because of some reasons mentioned in the text; however, the lecturer casts doubts on all reasons and provides concrete information to repudiate them.
First the author states that the fire has vastly obliterated the plants and trees. Moreover, the incident has caused environment to become uninhabitable for plants. In contrast the lecturer asserts that despite the fact that some specific species have been eradicated, a new habitat for other types of plants and trees is created. To illuminate this, he mentions the plants that need direct sun light to grow which now has the chance by removal of the sheds caused by trees.
Secondly, the reading declares that by the mass destruction of plants of the forest, there's going to be a flaw in the food chain of the species living in the forest. The professor, however, argues that like the points mentioned for plants, a new habitat has been created for animals different from the former residents of the jungle by the natural recovery process happened, which in this case was fire. To make it more clear, she gives the example of rabbits and claims that new food chains will emerge.
At last, the article discusses the problems that the destruction caused by this fire affects the tourism business in the region by reducing the number of visitors and consequently makes the economic conditions worse. Conversely, the professor underlines the fact that the incident will be a major problem if it happens frequently and also other elements like low levels of rainfall accompany this phenomenon. In addition, she mentions that the number of tourists has not declined since the fire incident in 1988, even the next year.
