TOEFL Integrated writing topic - Claudius of Rome

The reading states that the emperor Claudius of Rome was of great importance to the history of ancient European civilization and rates him as among the most innovative, fair, and wise in all Roman history. However, the professor casts doubt on the reading and refutes each of the author's reasons.

First, the reading states that Claudius was responsible for major innovations such as harbor for Rome and several new aqueducts that brought clean water into the city. The professor refutes this point by stating that these constructions came at a great cost of an army after the assassination of the previous emperor. Moreover, he states that this behavior of Claudius plunged Rome into the civil war.

Second, the article avers that Claudius was fair enough as he created laws to protect the rights of slaves and expand Roman citizenship to new people. However, the professor contends that Claudius was notoriously a bad judge as he never listened to both sides. Moreover, he loved violent gladiator games and once executed a thousand men just for fun. Also, the professor mentions that conquering Britain was his indigenous behavior.

Finally, the reading states that Claudius illustrated his wisdom by giving high bureaucratic positions to salves and women. The professor opposes this point by stating that all selected slaves were corrupt and subject to bribery. Also, he states that his wives were murderers. Moreover, his last wife poisoned him to see her son as the emperor. The professor condemns that his son later proved to be the worst emperor in history.
