TOEFL T P O 32 - Integrated Writing Task
The reading and the lecture are both about source of quackers. Whereas the author of the reading states theories about what might have caused that, the lecturer suggests that theories are strong but still there are debates among explorers. The lecturer casts doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
First of all, according to the reading, male and female orca whales may cuased that sounds during a courtship ritual. However, the professor disputes this point. She says that it is highly unlikely. Furthermore, she mentions that whales live near of the surface but submarines dive in deep ocean so they can not hear it even. Also, whales can be seen in submarines radar.
Secondly, the reading states that the sounds were caused by gaint squid. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. She argues that sounds disappeared for two decades. In addition, she points out that sounds seems unrelated to giant squid, because it is not explain why it been disappeared for 20 years and then suddenly continued.
Finally, the reading claims that sounds could come from some military technology, like another countray submarines. On the other hand, the professor believe that this theory is not hold up. She thinks that source changes its own direction quickly and noise from engine is so different. Moreover, she states that changing source of sounds quickly is difficult for submarines, plus, even nowadays there isn't any technology to produce that sound.
In conclusion, although the reading and the lecture are both about theories around source of quackers, the three main theories made in the reading are effectively challenged by the professor.
