The reading passage talks about the topic that it’s impossible to maintain human presence on Venus because of extreme conditions. The professor in the listening part, however, thinks quite the opposite and says that establishing a station 50 kilometers above Venus’ surface would make it possible.
To begin with, the author mentions that the atmospheric pressure is so large that everything landing on Venus would crush. In contrast, the professor notes that above the surface, the pressure is much smaller than that of Venus’ surface. In other work, the pressure is equal to normal pressure 50 kilometers up in the atmosphere. Thus, the station would not crush.
Another aspect provided by the author is that there is no water and oxygen in Venus’s atmosphere, which makes it difficult to build a permanent station there. This point is completely rejected by the professor. He comes up with the idea that through chemical processes, water and oxygen can be obtained. In detail, the chemical materials like carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid can be used to produce water and oxygen. Therefore, it is not necessary to import them from Earth.
Finally, the professor stated that the clouds are not thick 50 kilometers above Venus’s surface, so sunlight can easily filter through clouds. Furthermore, solar power cells can also make use of reflected light as well as direct light. Hence, electricity would be enough to maintain the station. This point contradicts the position of the author that electricity is lacking due to the thick clouds.
