Both reading and listening are discussing how agnostids -which they were kind of marine animals- may have lived about 450 years ago. while the text provides several different theories to support agnostids' livelihood. However, the professor casts doubt on them and refused them one by one respectively.
Firstly, according to the reading passage, the author believes that the agnostics may have been an active predator and they were by far exceptional swimmers just like primitive arthropods. Nevertheless, the speaker contradicts the statement, he says that predators in order to catch the prey they must have strong vision to track the prey and arthropods had a well-developed eyes which helped them to track the prey easily, on the other hand, due to the fossil records the agnostids had a poor vision and they were totally blind. Thus, they were not regarded as a predator.
Secondly, the professor rejects the claim made by the author in the reading passage that agnostids might have resided on the seafloor just like primitive arthropods did, and also they took advantage of dead organisms, the professor believes that many agnostics species dwelled on multiple geographic areas because seafloor species didn't have the ability to react fastly and go far distance and they remained in localized areas.
Finally, the author of the reading passage believes that many modern-day arthropods regarded as parasites. However, the speaker refuses the point and he says that the population of parasites were not very large. since too many parasites would kill off the host organisms that they live in. However, in fact, the populations of many agnostids were too low.
