Paragraph shows that the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico were notable for their great houses and Archaeologists discovered possible theories about the use of the great buildings. Whereas lecture cast doubts on the opinion proposed in paragraph.
First reason explained in the paragraph is that buildings had been used for residential purpose with hundreds of people in one housing and recent development like apartments is also depicting the glimpse of earlier residential area. Contrary to this opinion, lecture says that building was looking like apartment from outside but inside scenario was different. He supports his explanation with the help of counts of fire places. There were only few fire places inside which were not sufficient for hundreds of people.
Second theory in paragraph says that building had been used for store food supplies because main crop maize could store for longer time and used as a long lasting food. Whereas lecture raises point against this evidence by looking the condition of the grain maize because maize was spilled on the floor and excavation were not covered. It should be in big containers with covered lids.
Thirdly, paragraph delineates that buildings had been used as ceremonial centers and evidence is enormous mound formed by a pile of old materials like broken pots. Casting doubt on this explanation, lecture show that buildings were filled with building construction materials and mounds of sand and room could be used as trash of constructions. Regarding broken pots lying in the room lecturer says that the broken pots were used by the construction people who were having meals in that area.
