TOEFL TPO 34 - Integrated Writing Task
In the set materials, the reading passage brings 3 main reasons for declining the sea cows' population such as overhunting by native people, decreasing food source and overhunting by European people. On the other hand, the listening section brings into question the reading by providing different reasons (and examples).
First of all, the reading passage indicates that the sea Cows were the main source of food for Siberian people; therefore, the sea cows' population were decreasing by overhunting with native people. In contrast, the lecturer opposes this view by mentioning that each sea cow had 10 tons and 9 meters long; hence, they were so huge animals. A couple of sea cows were enough for eating some month of native people. Also, the population of native people were small; hence, they did not need to overhunting the sea cow.
Secondly, the reading argues that the main source of food the sea cow became extinct by ecosystem disturbances; hence, they did not have enough food; conversely, what the lecturer believes is different. He points out that the ecosystem change had an effect on all spices. Considering whale for instance. We have not been reporting for declining the population of the whale. As the result, the sea cow did not face with a shortage of food.
Finally, according to the reading, some European people overhunted the cows for their fur. However, the speaker believes that the sea cows' population was quite small when European came to the island. Therefore, something was causing a massive decline in the sea cows' population long before the time European arrived there, so they were not the main reason for the sea cows' extinction.
