The lecture gives reasons which states the same observations however, it removes all the doubt raised in the passage. The lecture states all the reason which clears the doubt regarding whether the painting is indeed of Rembrandt or not.
First, it is stated that Rembrandt was always meticulous with the small details of the portrait including clothing. The passage states that, the women in the portrait is seen wearing a white linen cap along with a luxurious fur coat, which is contradicting, as the white linen cap is only worn by servants, while the fur coat depicts of luxurious living. This is particularly peculiar of Rembrandt paintings. The lecture states that, upon x-ray analysis, it was found that the painting was tampered after around 100 years Rembrandt drew it. As per the analysis, the fur coat was drawn over the painting with an effort to make the painting look formal as well as increase the value of the painting.
Second, it is stated that, since the fur coat is dark in colour, there should be technically no light being reflected upon the face. However, in the portrait, a portion of the face is lit, as if the light was reflected from bottom of the painting. As per the passage, Rembrandt was very meticulous about this and he could not do such a blunder in the painting. However, the lecture clears the doubt regarding the issue, as upon analysis, in the original painting the women was wearing a light coloured cloth, which was causing it to reflect some light on the face. Thus, being consistent with the lighting.
Third, it is stated in the passage that, Rembrandt always drew on canvases with a single piece wooden panel. However, in this picture, several pieces of wood were glued together to make the panel, which was peculiar to other Rembrandt's paintings. But, the lecture states that upon careful analysis it was found that, when the painting was tampered with, the wooden panel was also tampered. In order to expand the panel several wooden pieces were glued to the original frame.
