TPO-04 - Integrated Writing Task Endotherms are animals such as modern birds and mammals that keep their body temperatures constant. For instance, humans are endotherms and maintain an internal temperature of 37°C, no matter whether the environment is wa
The reading and lecture are both about animals that are considered as endotherm. The author believes that dinosaurs were first not endotherms due to they are modern reptiles, but evidences were collected and shows that dinosaurs were in fact an endotherms. The lecturer cast doubts about the claims made in the artilce. She thinks that the data collected by the scientist proves that dinosaurs were not endotherms.
First of all, the author points out that dinosaurs are endotherms because they were discovered in polar regions. It is mentioned that if an animal can sustain a temperature beyond of its environment and live in a cold climate. The point is challenged by the lecturer. She says that the fossils found in the polar regions does not prove that dinosaurs were endotherms. Furthermore, she argues that polar dinosaurs if the season in the polar region is cold then they will migrate to warm environment or even hibernate.
Secondly, the the author contends that the physiology of the dinosaurs legs suggests that they are endothermy. The articles note that their legs are underneath their body and it allow sustained physical activity like running. The lecturer rebuts thus argument. She suggest that their legs under the body makes them to have high energy. She elaborates on this by mentioning that it support their weight and increase in their growth rate to its advantage and so endotherms does not need to run.
Finally, the author states that there is a clear connection between endothermy and bone structure. The article established their bones have Haversian canals which serves them to grow quickly, and rapid body growth so it is a clear sign that they are endothermy. The findings of the fossilized bones shows that they have haversian canals. The lecturer, on the other hand, posits that dinosaurs have haversian canals and growth rings which is the thickening of the bones. She puts forth the idea that the bones of the dinosaurs were not rapidly growing but in fact stop growing during the cooler period. The characteristics of rapid growth followed by slow growth of bones is not a feature of endotherms. The author also states that constant body temperature will result in rapid growth even if the environment is warm.
