The reading and the lecture is about the settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico and their respective reasoning as to how those structures were used. While the author of the analytical piece suggest that those structures could have been purely residential, inventories, or even as ceremonial structures, the professor casts doubts on each of these claims made by the author. The professor states that the author's reasoning is based on several unconscionable assumptions and proper justification is required before jumping to any optimistic conclusion.
Firstly, the author claims that Chaco structures were purely residential as these structures are similar to those large and well-known apartments in New Mexico where many people have been living for centuries. This point is challenged by the professor. However, these buildings seem similar to those apartments from outside, their inner view depicts that there weren't sufficient fire places for people to cook food. In addition, the professor states that there exists fire places for approximately 10 families whereas the number of rooms could have accommodated people of more than 100 families.
Secondly, the author argues that these structures were used as inventories to store food supplies as the structures were large enough to accommodate abundant maize supplies. However, the professor rebuts this point. He states that the excavation didn't encountered any trace of grain maize or any of their containers. So stating these structures as inventories is clearly injudicious.
Finally, the author mentions about the recent excavations where large number of broken pots were revealed which indirectly infers that these massive building of Chaco Canyon were used as ceremonial centers. The professor on the other hand asserts that those excavations also revealed some construction materials like sand and stones. So, it may be the possibility that construction workers used such pots to cook food and discarded those after their meal.
In conclusion, the professor effectively refutes each of the claims and theories presented in the passage.
