The article and the lecture are both discussing the settlements of Chaco Canyon from different perspectives. The article provides three main theories to explain how the buildings were used in the past. However, the professor believes that the theories that mentioned in the article are not convincing, and he refutes each one of them.
To begin with, the first theory posits that some people used to live in these buildings due to the fact that they are similar to the other buildings from the same period. The professor, however, refutes this point. He states that even though the Chaco houses are looking like the native American's buildings from outside, they actually differ from them internally. Furthermore, he says that if hundred people were lived there, then, there would be more fireplaces to accommodate a large number of the people, but, indeed, the houses had few fireplaces enough for ten families maximally.
Second, The professor also explains that the other theory that claims that the buildings were used to store the maize is actually unrealistic. He elaborates this point further by saying that if the houses were used to store food supply, there would be some maize on the ground or maize container in these buildings, but, in fact, none of these were found in Chaco structures.
Finally, the third theory states that houses were used as ceremonial centers. This point is argued by the professor. He states that houses were contained a large quantity of construction materials like stones, thus, they were unsuitable places for the ceremony. besides, the broken pots that found there are merely a trash and might be used by the constructors to prepare their food.
So, the professor successfully refutes all of the author's theories.
