Both the article and the lecture discuss the causes of the reduction of sea otters from different perspectives. The article states that the decline of the otters is attributed to the sea pollution and provides three reasons to support this theory. However, the professor believes that the real factor that leads to this phenomenon is a presence of predator that attack the sea otters and she refutes each of the author's reasons.
Firstly, the reading claims that the analysis of the water from the Alaskan coast proved the presence of some chemicals whish are dangeorous to the otter's health, since they reduce their immunity against infection. This point, however, was refuted by the professor. She state that is the pollution was the actual reason, then we should be able to find dead otters slong the Alaskan shore , but this did not happen. Moreover, this supports the idea of the predator, due to the fact that if these mammals was killed by another animals in the middle of the sea, then the water will not wash their bodies to the caost, whish is consistent with the reality.
Secondly, the readind posits that the nomber of other animals in the Alaskan caost have decreased and this strongly support the claims of sea pollution, and the orcas whis is the assumed predators ia actually prefer to feed on the larger animals. The professor, nonetheless, rebuts this point. She states that because of the human hunting of the large mammels , orcas is now depend on the small mammals as the basic nutritional source.
Finally, while the article posits that the uneven decline in the otter nubers can prove that the pollution is the cause, since the maximum decline is found in the areas of the high pollution, the professor challanged this piont. She statesthat this distribution depends on the accessibility of the location for the orcas. since it has a large size, it is not able to reach the rocky and the stony areas and, indeed, these are the areas where a large number of the mammals were found. And this again give a good prove that the orcas is the reason.
