TPO-08 - Integrated Writing Task
The reading and the lecture are both about a controversy among critics towards the life of a famous writer Chevailer, which is a person who writes about famous celebrities during the eighteenth century. The author of the reading believes that the accuracy of Chevalier's writing based on some evidence is somehow incorrect . The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks that those scripts are pretty reliable and exact.
First of all, the author points out that while living in Switzerland, Chevalier was not that much rich as some people says. It is mentioned that he even borrowed some considerable amount of money from a Swiss merchant for affording the cost for parties and gambling. The point is challenged by the lecturer. She says if Chevalier has not the huge money on hand, it doesn't mean he is poor. Furthermore, she argues that he had so many houses and properties, and selling each of them take some days. For this reason, he would borrow money from someone, and after the property is sold he would repay his debts.
Secondly, the author contends that about the doubt on accuracy of Chevalier records in a memoir between himself and a famous writer Voltaire. The article notes that the accuracy of these conversations is not high because it was written after some years when the conversation actually took place. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggest Chevalier wrote down every conversation he made with the Voltaire after each night he came home. She elaborates on this by mentioning that he was a reliable person because he consulting so many famous writers on those times.
Finally, the author states that the critics also questioned the explanation of Chevalier's escape from a prison in Venice. The article establishes that although he asserts about his escape by using a piece of metal to make the escape possible from his prison room, but critics say that maybe some powerful political friends of Chevalier escaped him from the prison . The lecturer on the other hand, posits that friends of Chevalier had more powerful friends but they couldn't escape. She puts forth the idea that based on the old Venice government documents, the Chevalier's ceiling room was repaired after his escape. This explanation proves the claim made by the lecturer.
