Both the article and the lecture are about Chevalier memoir. the article states that some of the events which mentioned in the memoir are actually confabulated by him in order to make his life more excitable and the author provides three reasons of support. However, the professor believes that the memoir is precise and reliable and casts doubt on the claims made in the article.
Firstly, the reading states that in the memoir Chevalier claims that he was very rich but recent evidence showed that Chevalier has borrowed a considerable money from Swiss merchant. The professor, however, refutes this point. She says that because Chevalier borrows some money that does not necessarily make him poor. moreover, because the selling process takes some time, he prefers to borrwo the money in order to pay for the gamblers while he waits to sell some of his properties.
Secondly, the reading claims that it is impossible for Chevalier to remember all the small details about his conversation with Voltaire, since a long time lapse between their meeting and the time when he wrote the memoir. This point was argued by the professor. She states that Chevalier, in fact, wrote the conversation immediately after he met Voltaire, then, he added later on to his memoir. Thus, it was easy for him to remember all the details.
Finally, the article posits that the incidence of his escape from Vietnam prison is really doubtful, the author of the article believe that some of Chevalier's friends bribed the jailer in order to free him. This point was argued by the professor. She states that some of the other prisoners with Chevalier had more powerful friends, but none of them was able to escape from the jail. Furthermore, studies showed that the ceiling of Chevalier was repaired after he get-away. Thus, this provides a logical evidence that Chevalier is actually escaped by the same method he mentioned in his memoir.
