The reading and the lecture are both discussing the two theories behind the decline of sea otter population in the water along the west coast of north America. The author of the reading believes that the pollution hypothesis is causes for the otter decline. However the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made by the passage . He states that the investigators revealed that the predator theory is more plausible explanation behind the reduction of otter population.
Firstly , the author notes that the oil rigs and other sources of industrial chemical pollution into waters has made the decrease in otters resistance to life threatening diseases. Additionally, water samples has shown increased concentration of chemicals the reasons behind its decline. The lecturer rebuts this statement. He posits that the as there are no dead sea otters seen in areas due to infection hence, a predator might be responsible for killing it. This is the reason behind it as such the predator kills and eat it therefore otter is not being washed to the shore.
Secondly, the author mentions that due to environmental pollution other sea mammals like sea lion and seals are also declined. The author also adds that since orcs feed on much larger prey like whales they are not affected. The lecturer challenges this claim by asserting that whales have disappeared due to human hunting. Furthermore, due to the absence of food for orcs they have resorted to eat other mammals like sea lion and seals resulting in a decline in its population too.
Finally, the author contends that due to the difference in ocean currents and other environmental factors there is an uneven pattern of otter decline at some locations. The lecturer contradicts this by giving a better predator theory explanation. She states that the areas more accessible to orcs show the greatest decline in otter population whereas the areas which are shallow and rocky are inaccessible to orcs making the population of otters stable.
