Both the lecture anfd the passage are discussing whether salvage logging, a method by wich old dead trees are removed from forest ereas, is beneficial or not both ecologically and economically. The assignment suggests that this method provide multidimentional advantages. However, the professor casts doubt on this calim and provide three main reasons vindicating her viepoints.
Firt of all, the passage claims that dead trees will not be removed even during a long temporal period. If we don't remove these dead trees after a devatating fire, there would be no room for new trees to grow in the cramped spaces. On the other hand, the lecturer challenges this specific argument reasoning that these dead trees will provide soil in the future and if we clean them up there will be no source of soil in the future.
Secondly, the writer suggests that new generation of insects which locate in such dead trees can effect harmfully the surrownding environment. The professor, on the other hand, oppose this argument according to the fact that these insects will provide no harm and the trees can live with insects population lasting for hundreds of years. The lecturer mentions other harmful insects and birds which are potentially harmful if we apply the salvage logging program.
Finally, the economical aspect of salvage logging is important for the author. In terms of economic benefits this program is accounted beneficial for the writer. However the professor collide with this point of view, because of small and indurable effect of program on economy. She asserts that the program itself needs large amount of money and will provide only limited temporary job positions. The wood however is useless from the lecturere's viewpoint.
