The reading passage talks about the endangered Torreya taxifolia trees and their reluctant walk towards extinction. It provides us with three techniques which if properly executed can result in the resurgence of the species. However, the lecturer refuses these claims by providing her own perspective on the changes suggested in the passage.
To begin with, the author suggests re-plantation of the Torreya in their original location. The lecturer disapproves of this idea of re-establishing the Torreya in its native location. She suggests that the micro-climate which hearths the Torreya is experiencing climate change. Due to global warming and the wetlands getting desiccated the micro-climate will not be able to maintain its cold and wet climate on which the tree exists. The drier lands would not be able to sustain the trees and will not be of much use to them.
Another idea suggested by the author was to relocate the trees to a more cooler climate in the north. According to the professor the idea of relocating the species to a more suitable habitat for its revival will also fail. She provides another example of this "human" assisted migration and how it backfired. The Black Locus trees which were facing similar endangerment issues where migrated further north so they can be revived. Although this act lead to the revival of the black locus, the spread of the locus was deadly for other plants and trees native to that habitat which were also on the verge of extinction. The relocation of the Torreya can also provide with the same results and therefore is too risky because of the collateral damage it brings along with itself
And lastly, the author puts forth the idea of preserving the Torreya trees in research centers. The speaker debates against the idea of migrating the trees from the wild to the research centers. According to her such trees will not be able to fight off diseases. Normally, to fend off any disease and to grow resistance against it the species needs a large population and diverse genes. That cannot be sustained inside a laboratory and an outbreak of disease will lead to the extinction of the whole species. Thus, this technique cannot be used to revive Torreya trees.
