Recently, there has been a ton of debate as to figuring out the culprit behind the endangerment of the Torreya taxifolia trees. More specifically, in regards to the passages, the writer puts forth the idea on some ways in which they can provide resurgence to this species. In the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out that there are some serious flaws in the writer’s claims. In fact, the professor believes that the techniques provided by the passage will not be able to abide by its promises, and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states that repopulating the Torreya in its natural habitat can prove beneficial in reviving the species. Some professionals in the same field, however, stand in firm opposition to this claim. In the listening, for example, the professor states that the microclimate which nurtures the Torreya is experiencing climate change. She goes on to say that, due to global warming and the wetlands getting desiccated, the microclimate will not be able to maintain its cold and wet climate on which the tree exists. The drier lands would not be able to sustain the trees and will not be of much use to them.
One group of scholars, represented by the writer, think that relocating the trees to a more suitable climate can help their revival. Of course, though, not all experts in this field believe this is accurate. Again, the speaker specifically addresses this point when she states another example of this "human" assisted migration and how it backfired. The Black Locus trees which were facing similar endangerment issues where migrated further north so they can be revived. Although this act lead to the revival of the black locus, the spread of the locus was deadly for other plants and trees native to that habitat which were also on the verge of extinction. The relocation of the Torreya can also provide with the same results and therefore is too risky because of the collateral damage it brings along with itself.
Finally, the author wraps his argument by positing that the Torreya can be saved by preserving them in research centers. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that such trees will not be able to fight off diseases. Normally, to fend away any disease and to grow resistance against it the species needs a large population and diverse genes. This cannot be sustained inside a laboratory and an outbreak of disease will lead to the extinction of the whole species. Thus, this technique cannot be used to revive the Torreya trees.
To sum up, both the writer and professor hold conflicting views about the methods which can be implemented to save the trees. It's clear that they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.
