TPO-18 - Integrated Writing Task In the 1950s Torreya taxifoha, a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida, started to die out. No one is sure exactly what caused the decline, but chances are good that if nothing is done, Torreya
The Reading and the lecture are both about the coming extinction of Torrela taxilofa, which is a type of evergreen tree from the state of Florida. The author believes that there are three ways to prevent the decline of this tree. The professor brings into question the claims made in the article. He considers that there will be no satisfactory solution with those three measures.
First, the author comes up with the idea that the reestablishment of this tree to its original home in the northern part of Florida. It is mentioned that this part is suitable for the Torreya to living in, because of its dry, warm climate. However, the professor argues that it is unlikely to survive there, due to the fact that global warming has caused this location becomes dry.
Second, the author states that the seeds and samplings of this tree need to be planted in northern forests. The article establishes that this measure should be done now to assure the Torreya's survival. Meanwhile, the professor rebuts this argument by pointing out an example of another tree “The Black Locus” this species when it was relocated in the northern forests in the past, it killed plants and trees. Furthermore, he highlights that this measure could help to extinct more tree's species.
Finally, the author contends that the Torreya should be preserved in research areas, thus its survival will be addressed. The professor, on the other hand, posits that this tree will not resist the diseases acquired in these areas. He puts forth the idea that it is not genetic capable to live in a long-term in a research center. In short, the lecture discusses the article's three solutions by giving an example why these are not effective.
