Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss about planting genetically modified trees. However, the lecturer holds a contrast idea as the writer.
Firstly, the reading passage suggests that the genetically modified trees are more likely to survive, while the lecturer refutes this statement by pointing out that uniform chareteristic of the genetically modified trees may make them more vulnerable. Since the nature trees have some genetical diversity between them, few nature trees resist virus and survive. On the other hand, the genetic trees are uniform and when the climate changes, all of the genetically modified trees die.
Second, the writer claims that genetically modified trees make vast and fast profit for farmers. Nevertheless, the lectures argues that by the law, farmers should pay for every genetically modified trees to the government. And the cost is not mentioned by the writer.
Last but not the least, the lecturer says that the using of genetically modified trees to prevent the native trees from extinction is totally unwise. Genetically modified trees grow faster and stronger in an aggressive way than nature trees. As a result, nature trees are not able to compete essential resources such as sun, water and soil with them. In the end, the environment will be crowed with genetically modified trees.
In conclusion, the lecturer disagrees with the merits that the writer proposes to plant genetically modified trees.
