Both the reading passage and the lecture discuss planting genetically modified trees. However, the lecturer holds a contrasting viewpoint as the writer.
Firstly, the reading passage suggests that the genetically modified trees are more likely to survive, while the lecturer refutes this statement by pointing out the uniform characteristic of the genetically modified trees makes them more vulnerable. Since the natural trees have some genetical diversity among them, few natural trees resist virus and survive. On the other hand, the genetically modified trees are genetically uniform and when the climate changes, all of the genetically modified trees may die.
Second, the writer claims that genetically modified trees make vast and fast profits for farmers. Nevertheless, the lecturer argues that by the law, farmers should pay for the seeds of genetically modified trees to the company. And the cost is not mentioned by the writer.
Last but not the least, the lecturer says that using genetically modified trees to prevent the native trees from extinction is totally unwise. Genetically modified trees grow faster and stronger in an aggressive way than natural trees do. As a result, natural trees are not able to compete for essential resources such as sunlight, water and soil with them. In the end, the environment will be crowded with genetically modified trees.
In conclusion, the lecturer disagrees with the merits that the writer proposes to plant genetically modified trees.
