Genetic modification, a process used to change an organism’s genes and hence its characteristics, is now being used to improve trees through genetic modification. It is possible to create trees that produce more fruit, grow faster, or withstand adverse conditions. Planting genetically modified trees on a large scale promises to bring a number of benefits.
First, genetically modified trees are designed to be hardier than nature trees; that is, they are more likely to survive than their unmodified counterparts. In Hawaii, for example, a new pest-resistant species of papaya trees has been developed in response to ring spot virus infections that have repeatedly damaged the native papaya tree population. Planting the genetically modified papayas has largely put an end to the ringspot problem.
Moreover, genetically modified trees promise to bring a number of economic benefits to those who grow them. Genetically modified trees tend to grow faster, give greater yields of food, fruit, or other products and be hardier. This allows tree farmer to get faster and greater returns on their farming investment and save on pesticides as well.
Finally, the use of genetically modified trees can prevent overexploitation of wild trees. Because of the growing demand for firewood and building timber, many forests around the world are being cut down faster than they can be replaced. Introducing genetically modified trees, designed for fast growth and high yield in given geographic conditions, would satisfy the demand for wood in many of those areas and save the endangered native trees, which often include unique or rare species.
The author believes that the genetical modification have a lot of environmental and economical merits. Supporting his opinion, he provides three reasons. The lecturer, however, rejects the arguments as follows.
To begin with the author of the reading passage asserts that the genetically
modified trees are more likely to survive in adverse conditions. this, however, is rebutted by the professor, arguing that among the natural trees there are a lot of variety which could make them able resist in different type of harsh climatic conditions; however the modified tree might be from a singl type. that could be very harmful for the trees because they are more uniform; thus, in a very bad condition they are more likely to compeletely wipe out. this is clearly in direct contradiction to what the reading passage mentioned about resistancy of modified trees.
In addition, unlike the writer who mentioned that the modified trees bring a greater economical profites for farmer who plant them. due to the fact that they grow faster and give more products such as fruits and wood, the lecturer is of the opinion that inversely, these kind of trees take more costs for farmer because the companies sell their seeds more expensive than wild trees' seeds. Furthermore, for each plantation time the farmers have to pay to the companies. this is in sharp contrast to the reading reasoning regarding the economical advantages of the modification of the trees.
Finally, while the author states that due to the increasing demanding for timbers and firewood, the genetically modified trees can solve the overexplotation problem of wild trees, the lecturer refutes this claim and points out that these new type of trees can, on the conterary, harm the invironment because they compete with wild trees for nutrients and water. they can easily crowed over the forests. this is yet another blow to the integrity of the argument put forth by the author of the reading passage.
For these reasons, the lecturer dismisses the author's arguments as unconvincing.
