To begin with, the reading introduces the genetic modification that is a process in which the genes of an organism are changed and it affects the organism's characteristics. The procedure is done to enhance the benefits of growing trees such as providing more fruits and providing the required wood used in industrial companies in a much shorter time.Nevertheless, professor challenges the benefits which are discussed in the reading and mentions the demerits of using genetically modified tree and these are the facts that the professor states:
First she asserts that the fact that these kind of trees are more resistant to the environmental conditions is not completely true. Compared to a non modified type of tree which has its differences between its own species and at least one of them could resist an unpleasant environmental condition, the modified trees are much alike each other and if there are composed to a difficult environmental condition they all could be demolished.
As the second reason for her saying, the professor mentions the hidden costs pertained to using genetically modified trees. she pinpoints the fact that the cost for buying the modified trees' seeds is much greater than the simple non modified seeds. The problem gets worse as soon as the farmer wants to grow new trees by using the seeds of his past set of trees which is illegal and its an obligation to pay for the new trees which he is going to grow.
The third and the last reason than the professor mentions is that growing modified trees could possibly harm the local trees. The reason for that as she states is the fact that the modified trees grow aggressively in the environment and in the vicinity of the local trees they could overpass the use of essential sources for growth like the water, soil nutrients and sunrays.
To wrap it up, professor disclaims the benefits of growing genetically modified trees for three reason mentioned above. So it is recommended for the farmers to consider the defects and advantages both together before deciding the type of trees they are going to grow.
