The article discusses the topic of ethanol and its disadvantages and tries to suggest that ethanol is not a good replacement for gasoline in the United states. In the listening part, the lecturer disagrees with this critic and attacked every point made in the article.
First, the article points out that ethanol fuel would not help us during the fight against global warming because ethanol produces carbon dioxide which is the main cause of global warming. However, the lecturer has a different opinion on this point, he states that ethanol would not be going to cause global warming because ethanol would produce from plants which eventually helps us to stop global warming. due to the plants the produced carbon dioxide is absorbed by plants.
Second, the article says that the production of ethanol would reduce the plant which is the main source of food for animals. In addition, if we decide to provide ethanol to 10 percent population of the USA, we are going to need 60 percent of corn which make no food for animals. The lecturer in listening disagrees with that and states that ethanol is mainly produced from cellulose from plants which are located in a part of the plant that animals do not eat so the problem of food never going to happen.
Last, the article claims that ethanol would compete with gasoline in the future if the government stop funding it because the government already lost 11 billion due to subsidies it. The lecturer in listening states that this fact is true but there is one flaw in this claim that is the price of ethanol would increase. When the time comes more people would start to use ethanol resulting in more production of ethanol making ethanol cheaper than ever. According to numbers if the production of ethanol increased by three times, the price would drop by 40 percent.
so to sum both the author of the article and the lecturer hold conflicting views about ethanol. it is clear that they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.
