In this set of materials, the reading claims that the ethanol is not an alternative to gasoline in the United States and provides three reasons of support. However, in the listening passage the lecturer casts doubt on this claim and refutes every reason mentioned in the reading passage.
First, the author of reading passage states that the increased use of ethanol fuel would not help to solve global warming problem. Since, burning ethanol releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere it has no advantages over gasoline. The professor refutes this claim. He explains that it is true that the ethanol releases carbon dioxide when it is burned for fuel but the plants used to produce ethanol absorbs substantial amount of carbon dioxide as a nutrient when they grow. Therefore, they remove extra carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Second, the reading states that the production of significant amount of ethanol probably would result in dramatically reduce the amount of plants available for uses for feeding livestock, for instance. The author illustrates that for just 10 percent of the fuel needed for the United States consumption, more than 60 percent of the corn available now would be used. In the listening, however, the professor rejects this claim by saying that the parts used for ethanol production are which they are not used for livestock's feeding. Therefore, if the United State has to use this part of corn plant, cellulose, for ethanol production it would not reduce the amount of plant for feeding the livestock.
Third, the reading posits that ethanol fuel is affordable now just because of the United State government's subsidies. If the government stop helping ethanol producers in any form, the price of ethanol would increase to extend that it would not be able to compete with gasoline on price. In contrast, the professor states that the price of ethanol is would be cheaper in future. If ethanol consumption increases it will help to drop the price of ethanol in comparison to gasoline price. Consequently, the ethanol will be more available. A study reveals that if the consumption of ethanol increases for 30 percent its production price will be decreases for 40 percent.
