The reading posits that the Little Ice Age were caused by several possible issues. The author provides some reasons for each of causing items. On the other hand, the professor claims that scientists have recently got new information by which the reading's ideas were seemed out of date and he refutes each of the reasons provided in reading passage.
First, the reading states that large ocean current, Gulf Stream, disruption contributed to the climate cooling in in all around the world during the Little Ice Age. However, the professor refutes this point by saying that current’s disrupting is in charge of climate cooling in northern hemisphere not the whole parts of the earth. For instance, neither New Zealand nor South Africa area were affected by Gulf Stream did they have experienced the Little Ice Age.
Second, the reading claims that several volcanic eruptions could have emitted dark clouds of dust and sulfur gas into the air by which the sunlight were blocked from reaching Earth's surface. This phenomenon would probably responsible to decrease the global temperatures. Yet, the professor casts doubt about this claim by saying that that is true that a lot of volcanic eruption took place during that time; however, they were not strong enough to cause such a freezing, low temperature.
Third, the reading posits that the forests became abundant just before the Little Ice Age. Since the trees take the carbon dioxide of the air and the carbon dioxide is a major factor in Green House effect which leads to increase the global temperature. Therefore, they contributed indirectly to the cooling of the climate. In contrast, the professor refutes this point. The professor explains that mentioned phenomenon had not enough time to cause long term climate cooling effect. Since the population grew again in a short time, the forests got cut in order to produce food and crops for population.
