The reading discusses that ethanol has been endorsed in the USA instead of gasoline. The author listed three reasons why it is not a suitable replacement for gasoline. However, the lecturer finds all the reasons dubious and presents some evidence to refute all these reasons.
First, the reading passage indicates that while it produces carbon dioxide, it could not help to prevent global warming. In contrast, the speaker states that it will not add to global warming, owing to the fact that every green plant absorbs CO2 so the CO2 is produced by it can be removed by plants such as corn. Therefore, the speaker rejects this reason.
Furthermore, the author points out that it would reduce the amount of plant which is available for feeding farm animals or other uses. On the other hand, the lecturer casts doubt on this issue and asserts that it can be produced with cellulose. In other words, it is part of the plant that not be eaten by animals. Hence, this idea is rebutted.
Last but not least, the reading debates that the price of ethanol and gasoline can not compete with each other. Because the price of the ethanol will increase greatly. On the contrary, the speaker dismisses this idea and says that by increasing the production of the ethanol, its cost will decrease since more fuels are available. Thus, the unit of every ethanol dropped to 40%.
